The formatting is written as inline styles, because pasted text loses any stylesheet.\n\n| Markdown | What you paste |\n|---|---|\n| `#` to `######` headings | Headings. Google Docs and Word apply their own Heading 1 to 6 styles. |\n| `**bold**`, `*italic*`, `~~strike~~` | Bold, italic and strikethrough |\n| Links | Clickable links |\n| Bulleted and numbered lists, nested | Lists with the same nesting |\n| Task lists `- [x]` | List items starting with a ☒ or ☐ character |\n| Pipe tables | Tables with cell borders, a shaded bold header row and your column alignment |\n| Fenced code blocks | Monospace text on a grey background, line breaks kept. No syntax colors. |\n| Inline `code` | Monospace text on a grey background |\n| Blockquotes | Grey text with a bar on the left, where the app supports borders |\n| Images | Copied as image references. Whether they appear depends on the app you paste into. |\n| Raw HTML | Sanitized: scripts, forms and event handlers are removed |\n\nEach app decides how much pasted formatting it keeps. Borders, backgrounds and fonts are the parts most often simplified.\n\n## Doesn't Google Docs read Markdown already?\n\nPartly, yes. Since 2024 Google Docs has a **Paste from Markdown** command. Turn it on under **Tools > Preferences > Enable Markdown**, then right-click in a document and choose **Paste from Markdown**. It converts headings, emphasis, links and lists, and handles well-formed tables. If you only ever paste into Google Docs and have the setting on, it works well.\n\nThis page is still useful when:\n\n- You want to see the result before pasting. The preview shows exactly what you'll get.\n- You are pasting somewhere else. Gmail, Word, Outlook and Notion don't have Google's command. Rich text works in all of them.\n- The Markdown setting is off, or you're using a computer where you can't change it.\n- You want code blocks to look like code. This copy gives them a monospace font and a grey background, so they stand out from the paragraphs around them.\n\n## Prefer a file?\n\nThe **Download .docx** button next to Copy saves a Word document instead. Upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs. The [Markdown to Word](/markdown-to-word) page explains what goes into the file.\n\nGoogle Docs can also import an .md file directly: choose **File > Open > Upload**, or upload the file to Drive, right-click it and choose **Open with > Google Docs**. That converts the whole file in one go, without a preview.\n\n## Common problems and fixes\n\n### The pasted text still shows asterisks and pound signs\n\nYou pasted the Markdown source rather than the rich text. Click **Copy as rich text** (not Copy Markdown in another tool) and paste with a normal Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. In Google Docs, **Paste without formatting** (Ctrl+Shift+V) throws the formatting away, so avoid it here.\n\n### Headings look different from the preview\n\nThat's expected. Headings are copied without fonts or sizes so Google Docs and Word can apply their own Heading 1 to 6 styles. The result matches the rest of your document and works with the document outline and table of contents.\n\n### Code blocks or table borders look plain\n\nEach app decides how much pasted styling it keeps. Google Docs and Word keep most of it; Gmail, Notion and some web editors simplify borders, backgrounds and fonts. The text and structure always come through.\n\n### Pasting a ChatGPT answer into Google Docs\n\nIf a pasted ChatGPT or Claude answer shows `**` and `###` instead of formatting, it was copied as Markdown. Paste it into the left panel here, click Copy as rich text, and paste into your doc. You get real headings and lists instead of symbols, and the text is never sent anywhere.\n\n### Copy doesn't work in my browser\n\nSome browsers limit what a page can put on the clipboard. The tool falls back to selecting a hidden copy of the document and copying it. If that is blocked too, select the preview on the right, press Ctrl+C or Cmd+C, and paste.\n",{"type":63,"title":64,"items":65},"faqs","Markdown to Google Docs FAQ",[66,69,72,75,78,81,84,87],{"question":67,"answer":68},"How do I convert Markdown to Google Docs?","Paste your Markdown into the left panel (or open an .md file), click Copy as rich text, then paste into your Google Doc with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. Headings, lists, tables, links and code come across formatted.",{"question":70,"answer":71},"Does Google Docs support Markdown?","Yes, partly. Google Docs has Paste from Markdown and Copy as Markdown commands, turned on under Tools > Preferences > Enable Markdown. Paste from Markdown converts Markdown on your clipboard into formatted text. This page does the same conversion in advance and works for other apps too.",{"question":73,"answer":74},"What is Markdown to rich text?","Rich text is formatted text: bold, headings, lists and tables, the kind you get when you copy from a web page. Converting Markdown to rich text means turning the symbols (#, **, |) into that formatting so you can paste it into an editor that does not read Markdown.",{"question":76,"answer":77},"Can I paste the result into Word, Gmail or Notion?","Yes. The clipboard holds formatted HTML and plain text, which Word, Gmail, Outlook, Notion and most editors accept. Each app decides how much styling it keeps, so borders and backgrounds may be simplified in some of them.",{"question":79,"answer":80},"Why did my paste come out as plain text?","Some fields only accept plain text, and some browsers block rich clipboard writes. If that happens, select the preview on the right, copy it with Ctrl+C or Cmd+C, and paste again. In Google Docs, make sure you used a normal paste, not Paste without formatting.",{"question":82,"answer":83},"How do I paste ChatGPT output into Google Docs with formatting?","If the answer pastes as raw symbols such as `**` and `###`, it was copied as Markdown. Paste the answer into the left panel here, click Copy as rich text, then paste into your doc to get real headings, lists and tables.",{"question":85,"answer":86},"Can I open an .md file directly in Google Docs?","Yes. In Google Docs choose File, Open, Upload and pick the .md file, or upload it to Drive and choose Open with, Google Docs. Google converts the whole file. This page is useful when you want to check the result first or paste into another app.",{"question":88,"answer":89},"Is my Markdown uploaded?","No. The Markdown is rendered and copied by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.",{"type":91,"title":92,"items":93},"relatedArticles","More Markdown Tools",[94,99,103,107,111,115,119],{"name":95,"badge":96,"description":97,"link":98},"Markdown to PDF","Tool","Download a PDF with selectable text and clickable links, built in your browser.","/markdown-to-pdf",{"name":100,"badge":96,"description":101,"link":102},"Markdown to Word","Download a real .docx with Word headings, lists, tables and code.","/markdown-to-word",{"name":104,"badge":96,"description":105,"link":106},"Markdown Viewer","Open an .md file and read it rendered in your browser.","/markdown-viewer",{"name":108,"badge":96,"description":109,"link":110},"Markdown to HTML","Need the HTML source itself?
