Here is exactly what happens to each element.\n\n| Markdown | In the Word document |\n|---|---|\n| `#` to `######` headings | Word's built-in Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles |\n| Paragraphs | Normal paragraphs |\n| `**bold**`, `*italic*`, `~~strike~~` | Bold, italic and strikethrough |\n| Inline `code` | Monospace text (Consolas) on a light grey background |\n| Links | Clickable hyperlinks (web and mailto links) |\n| Bulleted and numbered lists | Word lists, nested up to nine levels; numbered lists keep their starting number |\n| Task lists `- [x]` | List items starting with a ☒ or ☐ character |\n| Blockquotes | Indented paragraphs with a grey bar on the left |\n| Pipe tables | Word tables with borders, a bold shaded header row, and left, center or right alignment |\n| Fenced code blocks | A monospace Code Block paragraph style with a grey background, line breaks kept. No syntax colors. |\n| `---` horizontal rules | A horizontal line |\n| Images written as `data:` URIs | Embedded in the document (PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP), scaled to fit the page |\n| Images by URL | Not downloaded. The alt text appears as *[Image: alt text]* so you can insert the picture yourself. |\n| Raw HTML in the Markdown | Tags are removed and their text is kept |\n\nImages by URL are skipped on purpose: fetching them would mean your browser contacting other sites while it converts, and this tool makes no network requests with your content.\n\n## Why not just paste Markdown into Word?\n\nWord doesn't read Markdown. Pasting it gives you the raw syntax: pound signs, asterisks and pipes. Opening the .md file in Word does the same. Converting first gives you a document that uses Word's own styles, so you can restyle every heading at once, build a table of contents, or hand it to someone who has never seen Markdown.\n\n## Going the other way\n\nIf you have a Word document and want Markdown, use the [Word to Markdown converter](/word-to-markdown). For Google Docs, [copy the doc as rich text and paste it here](/google-docs-to-markdown).\n\n## Common problems and fixes\n\n### Pictures are missing\n\nImages that point to a web address are not downloaded, so the document shows *[Image: alt text]* in their place. Insert the pictures in Word with **Insert > Pictures**. If you generate the Markdown yourself, writing images as `data:` URIs embeds them in the .docx automatically.\n\n### The table columns are all the same width\n\nTables are laid out across the page with equal columns, because Markdown says nothing about widths. In Word, click inside the table and choose **Layout > AutoFit > AutoFit Contents**, then **AutoFit Window** if it gets too narrow.\n\n### I want a different font or heading style\n\nThe document uses Calibri and Word's own Normal and Heading styles. Change them once in the Styles pane (right-click a style, then **Modify**) and every paragraph using that style updates, which is the advantage of real styles over hand-formatted text.\n\n### The first lines are settings, not content\n\nFront matter at the top of a Markdown file (the `title:` and `date:` lines between two `---` lines) isn't recognized, so it ends up in the document as a line and a heading. Delete it from the left panel before downloading.\n\n### Lines I typed separately are joined\n\nA single line break inside a paragraph is treated as a space, as in any Markdown renderer. Leave a blank line between paragraphs, or end a line with two spaces to keep a line break.\n\n## Other ways to convert Markdown to Word\n\n- **Pandoc.** `pandoc notes.md -o notes.docx` converts from the command line, and `--reference-doc=template.docx` makes it use your own fonts and styles. It is the better choice for batches, footnotes and citations.\n- **Google Docs.** Upload the .md file to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs, then choose **File > Download > Microsoft Word (.docx)**.\n- **Word add-ins.** Desktop Word opens an .md file as plain text. Third-party add-ins such as Writage add Markdown open and save to Word on Windows.\n\nThis page suits a single document that you want as a .docx in a few seconds, with nothing to install and nothing uploaded.\n",{"type":63,"title":64,"items":65},"faqs","Markdown to Word FAQ",[66,69,72,75,78,81,84,87],{"question":67,"answer":68},"How do I convert Markdown to Word?","Drop your .md file on this page or paste the Markdown into the left panel, then click Download .docx. The file is built in your browser and saved to your downloads folder. Open it in Microsoft Word or any app that reads .docx.",{"question":70,"answer":71},"Is the .docx a real Word document?","Yes. It is a standard Office Open XML .docx file written with the open-source docx library, not an HTML file renamed to .docx. Headings use Word's Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, so the navigation pane and automatic tables of contents work.",{"question":73,"answer":74},"Can I convert MD to DOCX without uploading the file?","Yes, that is how this tool works. The Markdown is parsed and the .docx is generated by JavaScript in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server.",{"question":76,"answer":77},"Are tables and code blocks kept?","Tables become Word tables with borders and a bold header row, and column alignment carries over. Fenced code blocks become a monospace Code Block style with a grey background and their line breaks intact. Syntax highlighting colors are not added.",{"question":79,"answer":80},"What happens to images?","Images embedded in the Markdown as data: URIs are placed in the document. Images that point to a web address are not downloaded; their alt text appears in brackets so you know where to insert them.",{"question":82,"answer":83},"Will the .docx open in Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice?","Yes. All of them open .docx files. In Google Docs, upload the file to Drive and open it with Google Docs. If you only need the content in a Google Doc, the Markdown to Google Docs page lets you copy and paste instead.",{"question":85,"answer":86},"Can Microsoft Word open .md files?","Word opens an .md file as plain text, so you see the # and * symbols rather than headings and bold. Convert it first: open the file on this page and download a .docx, which Word opens as a formatted document.",{"question":88,"answer":89},"What file name does the download get?","If you opened a file, the download keeps its name with a .docx extension, so notes.md becomes notes.docx. Pasted Markdown is named after its first heading.",{"type":91,"title":92,"items":93},"relatedArticles","More Markdown Tools",[94,99,103,107,111,115,119],{"name":95,"badge":96,"description":97,"link":98},"Markdown to PDF","Tool","Download a PDF with selectable text and clickable links, built in your browser.","/markdown-to-pdf",{"name":100,"badge":96,"description":101,"link":102},"Markdown to Google Docs","Copy Markdown as rich text and paste it straight into Google Docs, Gmail or Notion.","/markdown-to-google-docs",{"name":104,"badge":96,"description":105,"link":106},"Markdown Viewer","Open an .md file and read it rendered, without converting it.","/markdown-viewer",{"name":108,"badge":96,"description":109,"link":110},"Markdown to HTML","Need a web page instead?
